Product Model Tools for AutoCAD
Product model tools for AutoCAD system are being developed
within PICTOR project
"Product Model Evironment for Construction Projects"
of STAR research program
"System engineering in construction" at VTT Building Technology.
The purpose of product modelling tools/enhancements for AutoCAD is to provide
mechanisms for representing, managing and exchanging product model data using
AutoCAD. The enhancements implement the generic product
data model on the top of AutoCAD.
- In general, CAD-systems are oriented towards drawing document creation and
for representing shape aspect (e.g. 3D geometry) of products.
- However, the application development environment of CAD-systems enable
enhancement of CAD-modelling towards product modelling; i.e. for representing
all aspects of products. This requires mechanisms for representing product structure,
properties of objects and their relationships.
- So-called AutoLISP Object System (ALOS), which is a set of functions,
dialogs and menus enabling representation, management and exchange of
product model data in AutoCAD. These enhancement implement the
generic product data model on the top of AutoCAD.

- Provides generic procedures for product model management.
- Public domain software tools to manage product model data with CAD-system.
- Can be used as a basis for the development of product model based applications.
Impact on process lead time
- Product modelling tools for current CAD-systems promote migration from
document oriented systems to the future product model systems.
