IST VOSTER fact sheet PDF doc
Contract information:
  • Project acronym: VOSTER
  • Project name: Virtual Organisations Cluster
  • Contract no: IST-2001-32031
  • Total cost: 1 350 000
  • Commission funding: 1 350 000
  • Key Action: II New methods of work and electronic commerce
  • Action line: II.2.2 Smart Organisations

    List of participants:
    CAM-I, CE Consulting, CeTIM, COMPUTAS, FhG-IAO, FIR, Loughborough University, Silesian University of Technology, Technical University of Dresden, University of Amsterdam, VTT (co-ordinator), Uninova, University of Salford.

    Project main goal(s):
    The aim of VOSTER is to collect, analyse and synthesize the results from a number of leading European research projects on Virtual Organisation (VO), i.e. geographically distributed, functionally and culturally diverse, dynamic and agile organisational entities linked through ICT. The scientific and technological objectives of VOSTER are to:

  • Consolidate VO related concepts and their relationships, VO types, characteristics and indicators;
  • Identify and recommend useful approaches for VO modelling;
  • Identify relevant technologies and standards and assess their potential for VOs;
  • Define functions of VO infrastructures and suggest ways to implement them; and
  • Promote VO approaches in European industries.
  • Key issues:
    Concepts,modelling, technologies, best practices, infrastructures, interoperability.

    Technical approach:
    Information acquisition from members projects and the state of the art; analysis; synthesis; integration and reporting. Interactions with other projects and standardisation bodies even outside the EU. Workshops with industry and research community.
       The duration of VOSTER is 30 months.
       The project will consist of 6 Work Packages:

  • WP1 Concepts: Define a European reference for VO core concepts. This will be done by collecting, aggregating, synthesising and consolidating VO practices and results in research and industry within and outside the VO community:
  • WP2 Modelling: Explain the usefulness of modelling. Identify and recommend useful methodologies and approaches for VO modelling. Identify and analyse existing models of VO in various types of VO, e.g. supply chain networks, engineering & project-based networks. Provide a reference models for future development of VOs. The reference models of VO will summarise the empirical data from case studies in each of the described topologies and provide the validations for the WP1 results.
  • WP3 Technologies & best practices: Identify existing and emerging ICTs to promote interoperability and best socio-organisational practices for the implementation and exploitation of them.
  • WP4 infrastructures & interoperability: Define the architecture, support services and interoperability principles for VO infrastructures and suggest ways to implement them especially for SMEs.
  • WP5 Dissemination & implementation: Provide platform for internal and external communication. Disseminate project results, contribute to standards and build industrial consensus about them. Organise workshops for information retrieval and feedback with the projects in the cluster. Prepare plans, roadmaps and guidelines for VO implementation and strategic planning by the partners and external actors. Provide suggestions to the FP VI.
  • WP6 Project management: Administration and technical co-ordination. Assessment and evaluation: Definition of performance metrics. Assessment of project progress towards the objectives. Quality assurance, Project reviews.

    Expected achievements /impact:
    The key results of VOSTER are:

  • Consolidated state of the art on Virtual Organisations.
  • Best practice guidelines.
  • Roadmap for future research.
  • Virtual Organisations community.
