OSMOS - Open System for Inter-enterprise Information Management in Dynamic Virtual Environments

Project summary:

OSMOS project develops internet based groupware environment to support non co-located teams in project based industries such as construction. The infrastructure will provide services for communication, co-operation, co-ordination and data exchange. OSMOS suggests migration from current document based information management towards semantic integration of documents, product models and project co-ordination information. Two OSMOS-based commercial Internet services will be set up as pilots. Deployment of additional groupware services in Europe will be promoted via interest groups in several countries and a European network of service providers. 

The scientific and technological results of OSMOS will be: 

• Specification of industry requirements including intra- and inter-company information process models, identification of required tools, interfaces and services. 
• Specification of construction groupware services including system architecture, interfaces and necessary extensions to common construction applications. 
• Two internet based prototype groupware services, hosted in Finland and France, including low entry tools for accessing project information in a Virtual Enterprice. The tools will include browsers for accessing distributed project information and tools for quick set up of the infrastructure for a new VE. 
• Recommendations based on field trials, suggested migration paths and analysis of likely benefits of adopting the OSMOS approach. 
• Conference papers and publications.
