Interactive visualization and animation of different 3D models have developed enormously during last five years. It is widely expected that the next "killer" IT application is about realistic visualization of the existing or planned object using virtual reality technology. Virtual reality technology is a combination of advanced visualization techniques with interactive computer devices. In practical terms we could characterize virtual reality technology as a means to experimenting with environments which does not exist but which have properties and functionality of real existing environments. Many universities, research centers and companies have recently invested on virtual reality studios. For example, at present there exist approximately 600 "cave" vr-studios in the world. Typically this type of virtual reality studio requires a room together with special displays, projectors, computers and supporting software. PC-technology based solutions are increasingly providing an interesting alternative for these capital-intensive solutions.
The PC-VR project shall be carried out in 2002 - 2003.
The project is to be carried out by VTT Building and Transport and VTT Information technology in co-operation with end-user companies and experts from leading companies and research community.
